We are here to uplift and empower you, to remind you that you are not alone, and to help you become a positive and thriving member of society.
My Story
A Journey to At Tuc's Place
I have a son that developed mental illness when he was 18. I spent years trying to figure out how and why this happened. As he struggled, self-medicated, and went in and out of the justice system. I struggled trying to find help, hitting walls, feeling alone and frustrated. I wondered how if I as an educated women could not navigate the system a mentally ill addicted soul was supposed to on their own.
I educated myself, I did outreach on the streets, I didn’t take no, I would cry in a puddle on the ground and then pick myself up and keep going. I accepted that he would never get better, back to the same person, but stable in his current situation. I had to meet him where he was and accept that together. See he didn’t see his mental or addiction issues I did. He doesn’t see he can’t take care of himself; I do. He doesn’t realize if he didn’t have help, he would be dead or back in prison.
I’m a certified home care aid now, I still do outreach on the streets, I have a state accredited sober living home. I will be opening more homes as I believe the first step to healing and recovery is a safe place to live. I don’t hide my story anymore behind the same of mental illness. I have found my mission, and it is to help make a change in people’s lives one place to call home at a time.
